Though there is a wide range of grade levels that can start at a particular level, keep in mind that within a level, children will be separated into different class times based on age and grade. In general, a student, no matter the age, who has a firm grasp of their math facts (5+3=8, 8x7=56, etc.) will start at Level 1, where they will learn how to trade the beads on a soroban-style abacus to do multi-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Older children who are struggling in math typically still need to memorize their math facts, and therefore may be placed in an age appropriate Fun Facts class to get them ready for Level 1. Younger children who still need an understanding of the decimal system and what the math operations are can start at Level 0.
